A dive into history

Casa Giulia is located in a historic building whose documented origins date back to at least 1770, when Gorizia was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In 1889, the property was registered to Antonio (Anton) Battig (1832–1896), a civil engineer who worked in Vienna and presented an innovative iron structure model at the Philadelphia World’s Fair in 1876.

Even today, looking out onto the internal balconies, you can still see the initials B.A. crafted in iron — a visible sign of his legacy.

Just a few steps from the entrance, you will find Palazzo Cobenzl (1587), the archbishop’s residence, and a commemorative plaque dedicated to Carolina Luzzatto, a symbolic figure in the movement for Gorizia’s Italian identity.
